We’re asking government to:

Support hospitals, long-term care homes, home and community care, and interprofessional organizations to develop quality improvement plans and improvement targets related to physician and health professional experience and well-being grounded in historical baseline data

Ensure Collaborative Quality Improvement Plans (cQIP) for Ontario Health Teams (OHT) include a collaborative experience and well-being measurement tool to identify baseline well-being for physicians and health professionals connected to the OHT. The baseline will inform future improvement targets and planning

Provide overhead support for community physicians, which will help fund practice improvement that supports physician well-being through investment in time, products or services that reduce administrative burden

Provide support for physicians returning to work from an illness or injury. Physicians are largely self-employed and do not have the same structures in place as other professionals to facilitate their safe and effective return to work

Accelerate the implementation of provincial programs to support in-patient treatment for substance-use disorders and co-occurring conditions

Continue the work of the OMA and government forms committee to further streamline and reduce the need for paperwork. The committee should provide provincial co-ordination and leadership on common municipal form issues (accessible transit forms, etc.). It should also consider limitations to, and payment requirements for, insurance requests, as well as look at addressing common insurance and employer-related form issues

Dr. Rohit Kumar, chair of OMA section Ontario’s Anesthesiologists, was on hand at Queen's Park Day 2023 as an OMA health-care advocate.

Why it matters

Physicians have the same needs as their patients. Doctors and their families need not suffer. If you're a physician in need of support, please contact the OMA's Physician Health Program.
